With a limited road system and generally favorable weather, much of Sitka is easily accessible by bicycle.
Sitka was formally named a “Bike Friendly Community” in 2008. The Sawmill Creek Road multi-use trail runs seven miles, starting near downtown at the intersection of Sawmill Creek Road and Jeff Davis Street. Another bike trail spurs off of the multi-use trail and links to both the Cross Trail and Indian River trail. Following the Cross Trail, a cyclist can ride on the wide gravel path to the Starrigavan boat launch, with connector trails linking to town at multiple locations.
Cyclists can make their way north along Halibut Point Road via a painted bike lane, but unlike the route on Sawmill Creek Road there’s no physical separation between cyclists and vehicles.
Bikes are available for rent during the summer at the Yellow Jersey Bike shop at 329 Harbor Drive or by phone at 907-747-6317. A two-hour bike rental costs $35, a daily rental costs $45. Renting a bike for a full week costs $270, subject to availability. Electric bikes are also available for rent for $85 per day.
Cyclists should wear helmets. Mirrors, lights and bright, reflective clothing are also advised.
